Aquarium Internships
AQUARIUM INTERNSHIPS
The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA), a science and history based education, conservation, and astronomy and natural science research institution is offering four summer internships in its public Aquarium. The Interns will gain valuable experience in the marine ecosystems of Nantucket and the plants and animals that live there.
Specific duties include:
• Workday that runs from 8:30 AM to 5 PM Monday – Saturday with evening and Sunday commitments as assigned.
• Daily operations at the Maria Mitchell Aquarium, including reception, gift shop sales, leading guided tours of the facility, collecting specimens for exhibits, exhibit preparation, and maintenance of the aquaria, facilities and grounds.
• Co-Instructor in Marine Ecology Field Trips, held daily from Monday through Saturday.
• Leader of Beach Discovery Field Trips held once per week.
• Participate in on-going biodiversity and scallop research in Nantucket harbors.
• Opportunity to develop a personal marine research project.
• Involvement in other activities of the Maria Mitchell Association, including staffing special events occurring during the summer
Qualifications:
• Educational background in biology, marine science/biology or related field with at least 2 years of college experience.
• Interest/experience working with marine systems
• Experience working with the public
• Self-motivated, independent and the ability to plan ahead
• Valid Driver’s license and scuba certification desired
• CPR and First Aid Certification required before internship begins
This is an excellent opportunity for students considering a career in marine or environmental science. The Interns will be exposed to many areas of this dynamic organization, and will participate fully in our busy summer programs. The Maria Mitchell Association is dedicated to Maria Mitchell’s passion of teaching science by doing.
Internships pay $2,700 for undergraduates or recent graduates, and $3,060 for graduate students, includes housing, and runs from 31 May to 28 August 2010, with required orientation and training from 31 May to 5 June. Optional internship extension available through 11 Sept 2010.
