Introduction
The mission of the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is to help people experience Nantucket’s land, sea and sky. Programs and facilities focus on environmental education, ecological research, astronomy, and historic preservation.

The MMA is offering three positions in its Aquarium internship program during the 2012 summer.  Interns are immersed in all aspects of operating a high energy and very popular public aquarium and spend a majority of their time engaged in hands-on, outdoor education and animal care.  The program gives interns valuable experience caring for marine vertebrates and invertebrates, interacting with visitors of all ages and leading outdoor education programs

The ideal candidates have interest and experience with marine biology and environmental education.  These internships offer a unique work opportunity for students interested in Marine Science as a career.

 Responsibilities and Tasks include

-Available to work a flexible schedule: hours of operation are from 8:30 AM to 5 PM Monday – Saturday with evening and Sunday commitments as assigned.

-Care for display animals and maintain aquarium equipment

-Interact with visitors in a professional and engaging manner

-Co-lead marine ecology field trips and beach combing field trips several times per week.

-Assist on collecting trips around the island.

-Engage in other MMA activities, field trips, and programs, including staffing special summer events.

Key Requirements and Qualifications
-Educational background in marine biology or related field with at least 3 years of college experience
-Enthusiasm for teaching science
-Interest and experience in marine biology and outdoor education.
-Experience working and interacting with the public, both adults and children

Skills
-Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and with a team
-Familiarity with New England marine ecosystems
-Ability to plan ahead, organize and prioritize with an attention to detail
-Clear communicator both verbally and written
-Teamwork and community leadership
-Comfortable working in waders and capable of lifting up to 40 pounds.

Internship compensation is $2,700.00 for undergraduates or recent graduates and $3,060.00 for graduate students, position includes housing. This program is scheduled from 29 May to 1 September 2012.  There is a required orientation and training from 31 May to 5 June 2012.  Possible internship extension is possible through 11 Sept 2012.

CPR and First Aid and Lifeguard training is provided during orientation week.
