Environmental Education Internships for Summer 2010
The Maria Mitchell Association, Nantucket’s Science Center, offers six Environmental Education internships and one Lead Teacher internship for the Summer of 2010. The Interns will gain valuable experience in natural science based curriculum development and implementation, teaching a variety of topics, and working with children ages 4 - 14. Interns will also work in other aspects of the organization through assigned projects.
Specific duties will include:
• Workday that runs 8:30 AM - 5 PM Monday - Friday with evening and weekend commitments as assigned
• Designing and teaching morning, afternoon and evening Discovery Classes for children and families
• Assistance outside of teaching duties include but are not limited to: special events, office coverage, and museum gift shop, assisting with ongoing research projects, and assisting with education program development
This is an excellent opportunity for students considering a career in early childhood education or the environmental education fields. The Interns will be exposed to many areas of this dynamic organization, and will participate fully in our busy summer program. Qualifications:
• Educational background in early childhood education, biology, natural sciences, environmental education or related field with at least 2 years of college experience.
• Interest in working with children
• Experience working with the public
• Child/Infant CPR and Basic First Aid Certifications
• Self-motivated and the ability to plan ahead
The Environmental Education internship stipend for the summer is $1700 plus housing. The internship runs from June 14th to August 13, 2010, with required arrival of June 12 or 13 and required orientation and training from June 14 -18. There are opportunities for interns to work an additional week or two weeks for teaching classes through August 20 or August 27.

Summer Director of Education
The Maria Mitchell Association, Nantucket’s Science Center, seeks a Summer Director of Education for the Summer of 2010. The Director oversees the work of seven teaching interns and teaches as well. The Director will train, supervise, and evaluate teaching interns teach a variety of natural science related topics, and work with children ages 4 - 14. The Director will also work in other aspects of the organization.
Specific duties will include but not be limited to:
o Train, supervise, and evaluate teaching interns
o Prepare teacher schedules and class destination assignments
o Perform class registrations
o Maintain class registrations, rosters, and databases
o Contact with parents and families of children in programs on a daily basis
o Observe and evaluate teaching interns in the field
o Assess classes and propose changes as appropriate
o Revise curriculum and maintain curriculum notebooks
o Maintain and organize teacher work area and class supplies
o Schedule and staff private programs and birthday parties
o Prepare weekly and final enrollment reports
o Assist with Administration office duties as needed
o Assist with and attend fundraising events and other events as needed
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced teacher or a graduate student who is already in or considering a career in early childhood education or the environmental education fields. The Summer Director of Education stipend for the summer is $550 to $625/week, depending on experience. The Directorship runs from late-May to August 27, 2010. Arrival date is negotiable.
