Marine Science Internships
MARINE BIOLOGY INTERNSHIP
The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA), a science and history based education, conservation, astronomy and natural science research institution, is offering a summer research internship for students who are now attending, or have attended Nantucket High School, or are residents of Nantucket.
Specific duties include:
• Workday that runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday, with up to 10 hours per week of evening and Sunday commitments as assigned.
• Primary responsibility will be to assist in all activities of the MMA Aquarium.
• Field work from boats, involving collection of specimens and data at Maria Mitchell Association field sites in Nantucket Harbor.
• Participation in any phase of MMA’s Scallop Research Program including underwater research.
• Involvement in other activities of the Maria Mitchell Aquarium as needed.
Qualifications:
• Student or graduate of Nantucket High School or a Nantucket summer resident.
• Must have own housing and transportation.
• Some background in marine biology, especially in laboratory and field research.
• A willingness to learn and to get wet and dirty.
• Self-motivated, independent, and responsible.
• Valid driver’s license and SCUBA certification are both desirable.
This is an excellent opportunity for students considering a career in marine or environmental science. The internship stipend is $500 per month and runs from May 31 through September 6, 2010. These dates can be adjusted to fit academic schedules, if needed.
