Built in 1968 and 1998, the two domes of this facility house a beautifully refurbished antique 8-inch Clarke telescope and a new state-of-the-art 24-inch research telescope. It serves as both an active research observatory and venue for public astronomical programs.
The Vestal Street Observatory

Built in 1908, this newly-restored dome has been the site of research, lectures, and other programs for over a century. View an outdoor scale model of the solar system, learn how to operate a sundial, and maybe observe some sunspots. Learn more about modern astronomy touring a permanent indoor exhibit.
The Maria Mitchell Association’s observatories are open for regular public tours, programs, lectures, and are also host to several special events throughout the year. Programs
The MMA Astronomy Department shares its knowledge and expertise through hands-on workshops, lectures, and special observational programs. Discover how to put your backyard telescope to its best use or discover the challenges of learning the techniques of celestial navigation through one of the hands-on workshops taught by the Astronomy Department staff. Discuss the demotion of Pluto with a visiting speaker or hear about recent discoveries in the universe at our summer lecture series featuring world renown astronomers from universities and observatories from around the world.
