The MMA Astronomy Department shares its knowledge and expertise through hands-on workshops, lectures, and special observational programs. Discover how to put your backyard telescope to its best use or discover the challenges of learning the techniques of celestial navigation through one of the hands-on workshops taught by the Astronomy Department staff. Discuss the demotion of Pluto with a visiting speaker or hear about recent discoveries in the universe at our summer lecture series featuring world renown astronomers from universities and observatories from around the world.
Something special happening in the night sky – meteor showers, a new comet, lunar eclipse – the Maria Mitchell Observatories are the place to be to learn more about the celestial event and how it fits into the science of astronomy. Unravel the mysteries of the night sky with the knowledgeable and approachable astronomy team.

View the Moon, stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae, and more. The telescope viewing will be accompanied by commentary from a professional astronomer and followed by a comprehensive constellation tour. Program is WEATHER PERMITTING. $15 adults, $10 children (6-12). Free for MMA members.

Watch the Geminids meteor shower from our Loins Observatory. Up to 100 meteors per hour have been predicted for this moonless time, if the sky is clear. Program is WEATHER PERMITTING. FREE.
Summer Family Astronomy Programs
Family Astronomy Nights at the Observatories
Thursdays, July 8 to August 19, 8:30PM – 10PM
For families and their children. Pre-registration required. Space limited to 15 children. Members $25 per adult/child pair; Non-members $35/pair. $10 per extra adult or child
Come with your child to discover the "creatures" found inthe night sky and learn how to identify stars and constellations. Beginning at the Vestal Street Observatory (3 Vestal Street) children will learn about the myths behind the creatures in the "celestial zoo," visit our public and research telescopes, and observe with a big telescope at the Loines Observatory, if the weather permits. A unique opportunity for you and your children to visit both the Vestal Street Observatory and Loines Observatory in one evening.
