8th Annual Maria Mitchell Association's Nantucket Birdathon
Description:
During the 24-hour period from 5:00 pm on Saturday, 16 May until 5:00 pm on Sunday, 17 May 2009, birding teams will compete to see which team can identify the most number of species of birds in Nantucket County and waters extending 10 miles from shore. Each team will collect pledges and team sponsorships to benefit the conservation, education and research activities of the Maria Mitchell Association, and particularly the Edith F. Andrews Ornithology Collection in MMA’s Natural Science Museum. Maria Mitchell & the Daring Daughters of Nantucket

Join the curator of the Mitchell House, Special Collections and Archives for a short talk about Maria Mitchell and Nantucket’s famous and infamous women, as well as the lesser known women of our island. Mitchell House Asleep for the Winter
Description:
What happens to a historic house museum in winter if it is closed? Come take a peek at the Mitchell House “asleep” for the winter. Experience the cold temperatures and think about what it was like to live in a home heated only with fireplaces. See parts of the Mitchell House not on display to the public, such as the root cellar, and warm up after the cold tour with a behind the scenes visit to the Special Collections and Archives housed in the Library where you will view some of the rarely seen journals and letters of Maria Mitchell and her family, including letters from Nathaniel Hawthorne, Susan B. Anthony, Emma Brigham, and Joseph Greenleaf Whittier.

Nature Explorers Club
Description:
This club will explore the natural world. We’ll do experiments, go exploring, and learn about animals, weather, astronomy and all things nature. This club will meet the 2nd Friday of every month. Every activity you attend will bring you closer to earning the Maria Mitchell Association’s Nature Explorers Club patch! Private Programs
Description:
MMA offers a variety of private workshops, tours, and field trips. Spend the morning birding with our ecologist, then come back to Vestal Street to tour our historical buildings, Natural Science Museum and the Aquarium. After lunch, travel to a local beach and comb the beaches for sea creatures, then end the day with a private tour and viewing at Loines Observatory. This is just one example of a full day of fun and education. Programs can be catered to your needs. These private programs are perfect for family outings, wedding weekend activities, birthday parties, reunions, and college groups. Project WILD/Aquatic/Learning Tree/WET
Description:
23rd 9am-3pm Project WILD/Aquatic 25th 9am-1pm Project WET 26th 9am-1pm Project Learning Tree Crossing Environmental Education with art, math, social studies and language arts is easy with Project WET, WILD and Learning Tree. Each program uses hands-on, minds-on methods in dozens of field tested activities that cut across the disciplines to build environmentally literate thinkers. Project Learning tree achieves this by using “the forest as a window on the world,” while Project WILD examines aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and wildlife “as small as a microscopic organism or as large as a great blue whale.” Project WET—“Water education for Teachers”—addresses water-related matters ranging from molecules to management issues. Project workshops are provided for formal and informal educators working with primarily K-12 audiences. People who use the Projects include teachers, scout leaders, conservation officers, rangers, day care providers, church officials, other community leaders, and maybe even you. 10 PDP’s per training available for teachers. Put on your wellies and come and explore vernal pools. Vernal pools are unique habitats that are essential nurseries for many insect, amphibian and reptile species. We will learn about vernal pools, and collect data in order to certify, protect, a local site.

Sat., & Sun., Dec 6th& 7th: 2:30 – 5 p.m. World Class Birding Experience at Eel Point ALL AGES View thousands of Long-tailed Ducks as they pass over Madaket Harbor heading to night roost in Nantucket Sound. Wine and cheese and other refreshments will be served. Non-member prices are adult, $40 and child, $30. Member prices are adult, $30 and child, $20.
